In my honest opinion, this will always be the better choice when you
are looking for a dog to add to your family. There are currently
3.1 million dogs in shelters in
need of homes—different ages, breeds, health,
and so on. Some of these dogs are housed in
shelters called "kill shelters," where a certain amount of dogs are euthanized so more
dogs can stay in the shelter.
Here are some pros of adopting a dog
from a shelter:
- Adopting one dog can save other lives!
Once you rescue a dog, this creates a new space
and resources for another dog in need of a home.
- Many of these dogs have been neglected or treated in another cruel manner.
By rescuing one of these mistreated dogs, you are giving
them a second chance with love and kindness.
- This is most definitely cheaper than purchasing
from a breed—which
can be about $1,500 to $4,500.
- By adopting a dog, you are avidly fighting against the
cruelty and production of puppy mills.
Here are some cons of adopting a dog:
- It can be difficult finding particular breeds
as most of these dogs are mixed breeds.
- Extra training may be required when
adopting a dog from a shelter. This happens mainly because dogs'
previous owners neglected them or have been living as strays.
- There can be potential
health risks. Some of the dogs' in shelters are older,
and may have been surrendered because of their
lengthy health issues.
- Because of neglect and little interaction, some dogs
may have behavioral issues that can lead to
agression or anxiety.
