Shopping for a dog, after doing the right research, is just as important as adopting a dog from a rescue. These dogs need to come from a certified,
and humane breeder—notice the key word: NEED.
Never support a "breeder" who does not take the dogs'
health into consideration before thinking about the money!
Here are some pros of buying a dog from a breeder:
- You most likely already know what to expect before getting the puppy. Breeders typically only breed and sell purebred dogs.
So, if you do your research on the breed, you will know
their behavior, temperament, grooming and exercise needs, and such
- You will have more knowledge on your
puppie's health as the breeders will inform you of such.
- You can find the health and
history of the dog's puppy line before selecting one.
- You can still get an older dog if you wish! Breeders often
have retired show dogs that need a good home with the right people.
Here are some cons of buying a dog from a breeder:
- Buying a dog from a breeder is much
more expensive than rescuing. You will need to esure you have
the financial means to purchase a puppy
and provide it with the things it requires.
- There is always a possibility of running into an unethical breeder.
These breeders have too many litters from the same dog
and are typically neglectful. Supporting them by purchasing a puppy
from them will encourage for a continuation.
- Some of these dogs or puppies
can come from an abusive background, much like the dogs
in shelters.
I think it is crucial for me to warn you potential
buyers to be aware of puppy mills. Puppy mills are a large-scale
commercial dog breeding enterprise. The dogs are often placed in
small cages with little room. Puppy mills also overlook the
health needs of the dogs which leads future healtchare issues.
If you find a breeder online with little to no information
about their practice, do not engage with them whatsoever.
